ADAC Rallye Deutschland: Endurance test for tyres

The ADAC Rallye Deutschland presents the tyres with extreme challenges

The ADAC Rallye Deutschland is not just a tough experience for the drivers - it is also a real endurance test for the tyres of the WRC rally cars.

The World Rally cars of the WRC stars all have high-performance tyres from WRC partner Michelin. For the asphalt rallies on the World Championship calendar, the French manufacturer has a selection of two tyre mixtures for road surfaces of different hardness levels - plus an all-out rain tyre.

Last year, Michelin came to the ADAC Rallye Deutschland with ten trucks and 21 staff members. Their luggage: over 2,300 tyres. The logistics for 2018 will reach similar dimensions. According to the Rules and Regulations, each top team at the German WRC rally may use a total of 32 tyres. In rain, they will have to make do with a total of eight tyres.

One of the greatest challenges for the tyres at the ADAC Rallye Deutschland is the Baumholder military range, where the both famous and notorious Panzerplatte stages will take place on Saturday, 18 August. Its predominant surface is concrete interspersed with rough stone. Many sections with extremely rough asphalt topping and some cobblestone passages complete the surface mix.

Since the Panzerplatte is a "tyre killer", a tyre fitting zone will be provided in Birkenfeld after the morning and afternoon laps, respectively. Here, the cockpit crews will have exactly 15 minutes to change the heavily worn tyres of their rally cars. Equipped with fresh tyres, they will then tackle the two Stages of the day outside the military range (Freisen SS, Römerstraße SS).
